When five teams each build their own retrieval layer, you get five different approaches to chunking, five different relevance thresholds, and five different failure modes. When a platform team provides a shared retrieval service with well-defined quality benchmarks, those teams inherit a tested baseline and can focus their energy on the domain-specific tuning that actually differentiates their use cases. The same logic applies to model access governance, token budget management, and output evaluation. Centralizing the common patterns does not mean centralizing all decisions. It means raising the floor so that every team starts from a position of strength rather than reinventing infrastructure.
Platform teams also become the natural home for AI governance at the operational level. Questions like which models are approved for production use, how prompt templates are versioned, what logging and audit requirements apply to AI-generated outputs, and how cost allocation works across teams all require a central point of accountability. Without a platform team, these governance functions either fall through the cracks or become the responsibility of a committee that lacks the technical depth to enforce its own policies. A platform team can embed governance directly into the tooling, making compliance the default path rather than an afterthought that slows teams down.
The organizational shift required to stand up this function is real but manageable. It does not require a massive new team. It requires a small group of experienced engineers who understand both infrastructure and the AI stack, empowered to build internal products with the same care applied to external ones. The most effective platform teams operate with a product mindset: they treat internal developers as their customers, gather feedback, ship iteratively, and measure adoption. The payoff is compounding. Every shared capability the platform team delivers accelerates every AI initiative that follows, turning a linear investment into exponential organizational leverage.
