Most enterprise AI initiatives on Azure start the same way. A team gets budget approval, spins up a resource group, deploys an Azure OpenAI or AI Foundry resource, and starts building. It works, and it works fast, which is exactly the problem. Six months later there are a dozen AI resources scattered across subscriptions, each with its own networking configuration, its own access policy, its own logging setup, and no consistent way to answer basic questions like which teams can call which models, what data those models can see, or what the aggregate cost actually is. The team skipped the landing zone step, and now they are paying for it in governance debt.

A landing zone is not a new idea. Platform teams have used the pattern for general cloud workloads for years: a management group hierarchy, policy-as-code baked in at the subscription level, standardized networking, and identity boundaries that hold regardless of which team deploys into them. What is new is that most organizations never extended that discipline to AI workloads specifically. AI resources get treated as an exception, deployed under whatever governance the existing landing zone happens to enforce for generic compute, which usually was not designed with model endpoints, embedding stores, or agent identities in mind.

An AI-specific landing zone closes that gap. It defines a dedicated management group and policy set for AI resource types, enforcing things like private endpoints for AI Foundry and Azure OpenAI so model traffic never touches the public internet, mandatory diagnostic logging routed to a central Log Analytics workspace, and budget alerts scoped to AI spend specifically rather than buried in a general cloud bill. It also settles identity boundaries up front: which managed identities can authenticate to which model deployments, and how that maps to the data classification of what those deployments are allowed to process. None of this is exotic engineering. It is the same policy-as-code discipline platform teams already apply everywhere else, pointed at a workload category that has mostly been improvised.

The payoff shows up in velocity, not just compliance. Once the landing zone exists, a team requesting a new AI workload is provisioning into guardrails that are already enforced, not waiting for a security review to catch problems after the fact. Governance stops being a gate and becomes infrastructure. That is the difference between an AI program that scales in a controlled way and one that scales into shadow IT with better marketing.

The Azure landing zone accelerator already supports an AI workload add-on, so teams do not need to build this from scratch. The harder part is organizational: deciding who owns the policy set, what the exception process looks like, and how quickly new model types get folded in as Microsoft ships them. Get that decided before the second AI project starts, not after the fifth one makes it impossible to reconstruct.
